I wish I had a picture, but I couldn't get a good one of her. I found her under the deck in Maine, USA. She was about an inch and a half in diameter and made a giant web about two and a half feet tall and one and a half feet long. she was grey or brown (it was hard to tell in the light). She had a distinct black mark on her underside that looks like an hourglass, or two triangles (we didn't want to get too close to her).

And before you ask, no, she was not a brown widow or a black widow. She didn't have the distinct red or orange coloring. Also, I'm pretty sure she was female because she had a friend make a web not a foot away, and he was much smaller. They both had small, but very distinct fangs. Also, interestingly, the female had four medium-sized legs in the front, one short leg on either side of where the abdomen met her head, and two long legs curving from her abdomen. Thank you for your help!

Was this web flat and round, with a spiral on it, or tangled, messy, and three dimensional?

The black hourglass reminds me of certain species of Orb Weavers (family Araneidae).  Like this:

However, orbweavers don't build webs so low to the ground, and build them out in the open.  Cobweb spiders that build the three dimentional webs are more likely to build a web in the dark area under your deck.
